Now in their third year, this show will continue bringing some of the best Shoegaze/dream pop/Post Punk bands to Chicago. This year they’ll representing on the South Side, at Bridgeport’s Co-Prosperity Sphere. In addition to what promises to be a show for the ages, they’ll be unveiling a new Marz Brewing shoegaze themed beer, and giving away tons of swag.

Videokaffe will install and activate a live “Screen Breach” video performance linking Chicago with Turku and Helsinki (FIN). Please come to the Co-Prosperity Sphere on Friday November 15th to experience this event.

Videokaffe is an international artist collective, exploring the intersection of handcraft and modern technology through exhibitions, art residencies, public art projects and our signature “Screen Breach.” Using these tools and platforms Videokaffe connects artists ateliers and artists communities worldwide. “Screen Breach” is experimenting with concepts of the tangible and intangible by linking kinetic sculptural installations from remote locations.

Compartments takes the audience inside of a unique water feature on the Des Plaines River, at the Ryerson Woods Nature Area in Deerfield which eventually flows into the Chicago River. This special place features shallow water that quietly flows over and through a rock bed forming several different "compartments" through which the water flows creating a variety of sonic effects. In this installation, the architecture of the bridge house is used to emulate these sonic compartments, allowing the audience to move through this environment. Re-synthesis of very close up sonic perspectives from each of these compartments helps to emphasize the musical nature the waters persistent flow through each compartment forming a circular oscillation between synthesized and found sound

Compartments is a sonic installation composed by Ryan Ingebritsen and organized by Experimental Sound Studio for the Tender House Project Exhibition at the McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum. This work is part of a larger body of work Ingebritsen that takes inspiration from Chicago’s diverse waterways.

Ryan Ingebritsen is a composer, sound designer, sound artist, electronic musician, and sound engineer whose work aims to enhance the expressive possibilities of sound through modes of interaction and utilize spaces and sound systems as instruments in an ensemble. .

The screenplay was inspired by a May 1952 Reader's Digest article by J. Edgar Hoover entitled "The Crime of the Century: The Case of the A-Bomb Spies." The article covers the case against Julius and Ethel Rosenberg for treason. Federal agent Belden (George Murphy) is assigned to locate the communist mastermind behind the leak, and to trace all avenues of informational access utilized by the Communists. Professor Albert Kafer (Finlay Currie) a scientist who is being blackmailed by the Reds into cooperating with them, while Alexi Laschenkov (Karel Stepanek) is the top Eastern-Bloc spy.

ABOUT HOTHOUSE SERIES: ON WHOSE SHOULDERS

On Whose Shoulders is a major multi-arts festival of films and other cultural content coinciding with the 100th Anniversary of the CPUSA (Communist Party USA).

The curators of the series have partnered with arts presenting organizations around the city to explore through film, oral histories, music, poetry, photographs and other documentary ephemera the legacy of the "party" and related events.  

The first event is on Monday, September 16  with the screening of Point of Order. The series runs through December 8, 2019 in multiple public arts venues and will additionally showcase content online and via social media platforms.

Twenty-one feature films and documentaries look at 20th century communism and related movements. The programs are presented across the city in five separate screening venues in collaboration with our partners; The Rebuild Foundation; Chicago Film Society; Co-Prosperity Sphere; the Illinois District of the Communist Party USA, filmfront, South Side Projections and CANTV. Margaret Chardiet was born and raised in New York City. As a founding member of the Red Light District collective in Far Rockaway, NY she has been a figurehead in the underground experimental scene since the age of seventeen.Devour marks the fourth full-length record from Margaret Chardiet’s project Pharmakon and her most intense output to date. Like her previous albums, Devour comes with a strong concept that is exorcised throughout the five demolishing tracks on the album, using imagery and language of self-cannibalism as allegory for the self-destructive nature of humans. Each of the five songs echoes a stage of grief associated with this cyclical chamber of self-destruction and the chaos surrounding us that leads us to devour ourselves in an attempt to balance the agony. The album was recorded by Ben Greenberg (Uniform) and is the first Pharmakon album recorded live in studio. The A and B sides were each recorded as a continuous take with vocals from start to finish, marking a totally new process for the artist that allows the ferocity and immediacy of her live performance to resonate throughout. Devour also explores new sonic territory, with denser electronics, groovier hooks, and moments of her most unhinged vocal deliveries to date. As one of the premiere vanguards of modern industrial and power electronics, Chardiet continuously pushes the genres and everyone involved in them, and with the release of Devour, she has once again changed the game.

Resistance to the political climate of today necessitates collaboration, movement building, and organizing. Artists are a key part of this struggle. Their work is found in the community—on the streets, in demonstrations, and in the day-to-day organizing tactics of social justice movements. Activist artists depend on each other and the cultivation of networks of resistance in order to continuously contribute to the struggle, sustain themselves and their work, and inspire others to act.

Networks of Resistance showcases the labyrinth of activist art from Chicago and beyond. Activist artists and collectives from Chicago are featured alongside collaborative projects from the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative—a North American print cooperative with 29 artists from across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

Featured work includes projects by members of the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative, the Art Build Workers, The Chicago ACT Collective, CultureStrike, Dignidad Rebelde, William Estrada, For the People Artists Collective, Imaging Apartheid, Sam Kirk, Damon Locks, PansyGuild, Monica Trinidad, Santiago X, and more.

Art Histories is a Red Line Service program in which participants with a lived experience of homelessness, food or economic insecurity wrote art history essays. On Sunday, October 6, participants will perform their art historical essays to conventional and new art audiences. These encounters create platforms for audiences with different skills and expertise to meet and learn from one another.

Soup and hot drinks will be served.

Food for this event is generously provided by Zac Green, head-chef of Marz Community Brewing Taproom.

Red Line Service connects people with a lived experience of homelessness to cultural webs. By being introduced to these artistic experiences and communities cultural, intellectual, and spiritual belonging is created. Unlike other models of service, which maintain inequality and exclusion through a ‘giver of privilege’ and ‘recipient in need’ framework, Red Line Service creates interdependent communities of mutual care through art, in which social inclusion is forged. Red Line Service is premised on the evidence-based research that social inclusion is one key factor in pursuing, securing and retaining housing. 

Tender House Project works to realize the latent potential of Chicago’s iconic yet overlooked bridgehouses, proposing that this hidden infrastructure is a cultural asset that will breathe needed life into the Chicago River.

In collaboration with Togetherism, a two-month festival of artists groups curated by Public Media Institute, eight  Chicago-based groups will creatively activate the Michigan Avenue bridgehouse and surrounding riverwalk areas.

Exhibited work will feature design proposals from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Master of Architecture program and design proposal submitted by the public. The result contributes toward a city-wide strategy of highlighting the Chicago River as a cultural corridor. With 70 bridgehouses spanning 13 miles of the Chicago River and having direct access to 15 neighborhoods, these underutilized buildings will be vital to fostering a connected and culturally celebrated Chicago.

Join Tiara Hughes of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP for an hour-long seminar about FIRST 500, a research endeavor that is primarily focused on highlighting African American women architects (0.3% of all architects) and raising awareness of their distinction. FIRST 500 has already begun as a lecture series (featured in publications, podcasts and conferences) and a network. Eventually this project will become a publication highlighting each of the licensed African American women architects. The publication will serve as a central resource for all their stories to inspire young girls interested in entering the industry and the network to provide a place of mentorship when they do.

Roberta Washington is principal at Roberta Washington Architects, PC, which she founded in 1983. She is the past president of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA), a fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and an advisory board member of the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation. She frequently lectures about the history of African Americans in architecture and has researched and written about early black women architects.

About I-Noma: The Illinois Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects creates a platform of inclusion and growth to support all minority designers; as defined by ethnicity, gender, religion and sexual orientation. Sunday Soup is a community fundraising meal project initiated by InCUBATE (Abigail Satinsky, Bryce Dwyer, Roman Petruniak & Matt Joynt) and others in the Chicago art community, which was in operation from 2007-2010. It was a grassroots project to generate funds for artist initiatives and community projects through a grant raised by the meal. It inspired over 60 chapters across the world, all doing their own variations of the soup model.

For each meal, chefs and friends prepare a soup and accompanying dishes using local ingredients. The money from ticket sale becomes a grant. Diners vote on proposals for creative projects that are displayed at the meal. The project that gets the most votes is awarded the money.

This weekend's soup will be prepared by Won Kim of Kimski Chicago. Abby Satinsky & Matt Joynt will be there on behalf of the InCUBATE crew. The meal will also serve as a soft launch for Marz Brewing's Co-prosperity Beer — profits from the beer will fund an ongoing grant for art & activism projects. In true togetherism spirit, we need you to show up to help determine how to distribute the beer grant money in a way that best serves the community.

The Chicago Architecture Biennial has since its inception been supported by petrochemical dollars. It’s not the only biennial either to have ties to the unsavory people and companies that sit at the commanding heights of the economy; recently artists successfully used a biennial boycott to oust Warren B. Kanders (whose company manufactures tear-gas used on the border) from the board of the Whitney Museum. Join us for a discussion of the politics of biennials with experts and activists where ask ourselves difficult questions about the place of activist practices within biennials, and talk about how architects can best use the opportunity of Biennials to best work toward a more just world.

Eco Sensing Chicago River Works connects the experience of walking along the river with mobile technology; listening and recording data as citizen scientists map the health of the city’s water. As you walk along the path, the sights and sounds of the river system open new awareness to the anthrophonic, biophonic, and geophonic sounds around us. Using the Chicago River Data Worksheet, sonic discoveries combine with light and temperature readings and observations of biodiversity of life and periods of activity and non-activity along the river.  

Riverworks is an interdisciplinary collaboration of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago Eco Design Students with Chicago Organizations that examines the creative possibilities of aquatic bioacoustics and the potential for new approaches to the data driven conservation of urban global river systems. River Works imagines immersive spaces of community engagement with listening labs, field recordings, soundmaps, performances and installations that raise understanding of river health and aquatic and human biodiversity and coexistence. Eco Sensing increases the critical value of water wisdom and elevates the importance of river systems to urban health. Explore the value of acoustics and technology in contributing towards environmental awareness and engagement and Chicago’s new Eco Cruise.

Deep Time Chicago will host a “Walk About It,” tour and discussion focused on the ways in which we (humans) have shaped, altered, and harnessed the Chicago River and the waterways of the city and Illinois to serve our purposes. We will be joined by Rachel Havrelock, an expert in, and advocate for, issues surrounding water use in the Great Lakes Region. She is the founder of Freshwater Lab, a humanities-based initiative focused on research, teaching, and public awareness about the Great Lakes. We will also discuss Deep Time’s work on the Mississippi River with their project Confluence Ecologies that addresses the human and non-human forms of contemporary life found in the regionally significant meeting place formed by two great rivers, the Ohio and the Mississippi in southern Illinois.

The tour will meet at the Bridgehouse Museum at 1PM for introductions. The group will then proceed to the Chicago Water Taxi dock at the Chicago Riverwalk for a ride to Ping Tom Park and back (round trip tickets are $10, or one way are $6). As the boat heads south, our Walk About It tour group will lead a peaceful takeover of the water taxi to continue our discussion of downtown Chicago’s relationship with the river, sites of industry on its banks, and the future“78” neighborhood: the formerly abandoned land known as Rezkoville that was home to wild urban nature and a homeless encampment, ending at the Ping Tom Park dock situated between two of the city’s historic bascule bridges.

Deep Time Chicago is an art/research/activism initiative whose goal is to explore humanity as a geological agency, capable of disrupting the earth system and inscribing present modes of existence into deep time. They periodically host “Walk About It” tours, which have brought together people at sites all over the city to discuss the effects of the human built environment and human-made change in the age of the Anthropocene, the geologic era defined by human-made changes.

Rachel Havrelock is the founder and director of the UIC Freshwater Lab, a humanities-based initiative focused on research, teaching, and public awareness about the Great Lakes.  The Freshwater Lab sponsors summits that bring researchers, elected officials, and water professionals together for transformative dialogue; offers courses and training that treat the lakefront and its communities as living labs; and fosters connections between leaders from the Great Lakes and other watersheds through water diplomacy. She is also Associate Professor of Jewish Studies and English at the University of Illinois at Chicago and author of River Jordan: The Mythology of a Dividing Line (University of Chicago Press, 2011).

Togetherism This project is part of Public Media Insititute’s Fall programming festival Togetherism, which  examines creative experiments with horizontal, collective art-making and organizing. The series is inspired by (and hopes to inspire) forms of radical, liberating practice where collective creative work rethinks and reforms the ways of living in society. The festival will feature the work of both historical and contemporary groups from Chicago and beyond. Not quite utopian, each group serves variously as a proof of concept, a failure, a new direction to pursue, or an example of why “we” can change. BEN LAMAR GAY CONCERT AT THE BRIDGEHOUSE

Chicago Artist, Ben LaMar Gay will perform two concerts presented by International Anthem. On September 12th, Ben will engage audiences and the public by playing both inside and outside of the bridgehouse.  

Ben LaMar Gay is a composer and cornetist who moves components of sound, color, and space through folkloric filters to produce brilliant electroacoustic collages. The Chicago native’s true technique is giving life to an idea while exploring and expanding on the term Americana. Inspired by the vibrant experimental music scene of Chicago, and a three-year residency in Brazil, Gay collaborates with some influential figures in the world of music, dance, and visual arts including George Lewis, Itiberê Zwarg, Onye Ozuzu, Qudus Onikeku, Nicole Mitchell, Jeff Parker, Catherine Sullivan, Mike Reed, Joshua Abrams, Celso Fonseca, Tomeka Reid, The Black Monks of Mississippi, Bixiga 70 and the Association of the Advancement of Creative Musicians. His musical influences derive from his collection of experiences in all of the Americas and the gathered data channeled by technology and its amplifying accessibility. Embracing international vision while remaining true to his roots, Gay’s creative output aligns with the honest notion that he only knows how to be a man from the South side of Chicago

Fifty-seven brilliant artists have created work for this celebration of contemporary comics culture in Chicago and beyond.

The 170 page soft cover, perfect bound Lumpen Comics Book ( issue #134) will be released on Friday, August 30, from 7pm- midnight at the Co-Prosperity Sphere ( 3219 S Morgan Street, Chicago Il 60608 ) There will be an exhibition of all the work in the gallery. Music by Drew Ryan Hunter Husar and Fetter will be performed and beverages will be available.

This program will feature performances and interviews and will be broadcast live on the internet via Worldwide FM and terrestrially via WLPN-LP 105.5FM Lumpen Radio, Chicago.
Preservation Of Fire is a showcase of creative and improvisational music from Chicago.

The Chicago Jazz Festival showcases live musical performances by important Chicago artists alongside some of the greatest names from around the world. The free events take place in Millennium Park, at the Chicago Cultural Center and at venues throughout the city. Produced by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and programmed by the Jazz Institute of Chicago along with various venues and curators throughout the City. The Radical Visibility Collective, led by Sky Cubacub of Rebirth Garments , Compton Q, and Jake Vogds, is designing an immersive and accessible fashion performance. Their vision for queer disabled futurism will manifest in live performers wearing a entirely new second collection of winter wear, all moving to an original, multi-collaborative sophomore album that invites folx with visual impairments to the show. All of the lyrics will be audio descriptions that talk about what the models are wearing, their dance moves and the models’ identities described in the model’s own words.

In Spring 2018, the collective worked together on their first collection in a month-long residency with the Evanston Art Center. They debuted their first collection at the Chicago History Museum in March alongside other talented queer designers with incredible success, noted by Paper Magazine to be “a pioneering, wholly inclusive and immerse fashion experience.” The performance welcomed a little over 300 people to the bright colors, exuberant fabrics, and innovative designs that encapsulate radical visibility.

If you miss the show, do not worry!- To document the show, we will create both a music video and a zine. The music video will encapsulate the space and performance with closed captioning, and the zine will show photographs and lyrics collaged together with an accompanying CD of music to provide audio descriptions, so people can continue to experience our vision for radical visibility.

This fall, Lumpen Magazine will release a publication as part of the “Togetherism” programming season. The publication, too, is a collaborative and experimental project. 

Togetherism examines creative experiments with horizontal, collective art-making and organizing. Work done in groups provokes us to consider other social forms than the established. Group work challenges conventions of value and authority in art and society. 

We are seeking submissions from group members (current or former), organizers and thinkers that can address the following questions: 

How can collaborative work be liberating, radical, nurturing, or a form of coping and survival?

What does it mean to work collectively in the time of isolated, individualized labor in the arts and beyond? Why do groups come together, and how do they fall apart?

Please send a proposal through the submission form by Friday, August 9.

Final submissions are due August 1, 2019.
